Data Scientist – GenAI & Machine Learning

About the role

Erste Digital, the digital unit of Erste Group, the largest banking group in Central and Eastern Europe, is looking for a Data Scientist focused on Generative AI and Machine Learning. You will build Data Science and GenAI solutions that create measurable value for internal business customers across Retail, Corporate, Operations, Data Quality and other areas, using use cases such as customer experience, sales optimisation, churn prevention, transaction classification, text and document processing, knowledge assistants and AI-powered automation.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and evaluate predictive models, machine learning solutions and GenAI applications, including LLM-based solutions, RAG, AI agents and other emerging AI technologies.
• Work across the full Data Science and AI lifecycle, from understanding the business problem and exploring data to preparation, feature engineering, model development, experimentation, evaluation, deployment and continuous improvement.
• Apply evaluation methods and guardrails so that AI and GenAI solutions are accurate, reliable, explainable and fit for use in a regulated banking environment.
• Collaborate with business experts, Data Engineers, Software Engineers and AI Platform teams to turn prototypes into robust, scalable, production-ready solutions.
• Work independently and in teams, and share knowledge with colleagues and subject-matter experts.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree with a focus on quantitative disciplines.
• At least 2 years of practical experience as a Data Scientist.
• Good understanding of statistical methods and common machine learning algorithms.
• Basic understanding of the banking business.
• English at full professional level.

Required skills

• Hands-on experience designing and developing applications using the Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) pattern, including chunking, embedding and querying a Large Language Model.
• Good knowledge of Python, Spark and SQL.
• Hands-on experience with Databricks is a big plus.
