Medical Director – Ophthalmology (Remote, Europe)

About the role

Fortrea is looking for a Europe‑based Medical Director (or Senior Medical Director) with deep expertise in ophthalmology to lead innovative drug development programs, including cell and gene therapies. The role combines scientific leadership, medical monitoring, and client‑facing business development across early‑phase innovation and late‑phase global studies.

Key responsibilities

• Provide medical leadership and oversight for ophthalmology projects from early‑phase to late‑phase global programs.
• Serve as study physician, overseeing medical monitoring, safety review, and protocol development.
• Collaborate with clients, internal project teams, key opinion leaders, and site investigators.
• Shape clinical and medical strategy for proposals, bid defenses, and client discussions.
• Review and revise protocols, case report forms, training materials, analysis plans, and regulatory submissions.
• Prepare and present materials for investigator meetings and site initiation visits.

Required profile

• MD degree with board certification in ophthalmology.
• Minimum 3 years of drug development and clinical research experience in ophthalmology within the pharmaceutical or CRO industry.
• Proven experience in clinical trial medical monitoring and oversight.
• Strong scientific leadership and ability to engage senior client executives.
